Topic 27 28



Topic 27     Simple Past Tense  ( didn’t F1)      (Negative  - )

To express the ordinary verb of the Simple Past Tense in negative, put ‘didn’t’ before the subject [S] and a root verb after it.

      [ You ] laughed loudly yesterday afternoon.
      [ You ]  didn’t laugh loudly yesterday afternoon
      
     [ Peter ] told us a story.
     [ Peter] didn’t tell us a story.

     [ Tina ] bought an umbrella last Tuesday.
     [ Tina ] didn’t buy an umbrella last Tuesday.

     [ The dog] barked loudly last night.
     [ The dog] did not bark loudly last night.      (didn’t = did not)

     [ Yalee and I ] shared our lunch yesterday.
     [ Yalee and I] didn’t share our lunch yesterday.

     [ You and Hassan ] went fishing last Sunday.
     [ You and Hassan] didn’t go fishing last Sunday.

     [ Jack and his friends] jumped a lot yesterday.
     [ Jack and his friends] didn’t jump a lot yesterday.


When the ordinary verb is in F3,  you always use ‘didn’t F1’ for negative statements.  The auxiliary verb ‘did’ is not affected by the subject in number (singular / plural) at all.

Topic 28      Simple Past Tense in questions      (?)

It is used to express the fact and habit in the past with a time expression.
To express the Simple Past Tense in questions,  we use the root verb in question using ‘did / didn’t’

     [ Jack ] sang well yesterday.
     Did [ Jack] sing well yesterday?

     [ Meena ] walked a lot yesterday.
     Did [ Meena ] walk a lot yesterday?

     [ The cat ] ate a lot last Saturday.
      Did [ the cat ] eat a lot last Saturday?

     [ The children ] screamed loudly yesterday.
     Did [ the children ] scream loudly yesterday?

     [ You ] ran a lot yesterday afternoon.
     Did [ I ] run a lot yesterday afternoon?

The Simple Past tense of the auxiliary verbs ‘do / does’ is ‘did’.  The auxiliary verbs ‘do / does / did’  are always followed by a root verb/ F1.
