It is used to express what a person will do or not in a certain condition.

           |                                    |
Simple Present               Simple Future / Simple Past / Simple Present

We can place the if –clause before the main clause but you must punctuate it with a comma.  However, if you place the if-clause after the main clause, you don’t need a comma.

If Aminah visits us, she will bring along her chess.
I shall visit you if I am free tomorrow.
The dog will bite if you disturb it.

b)  the main clause  ----- Simple Past
It is to show the fact in the past under the condition as mentioned.

Ali took it yesterday if it is the clock you want.
If it is the book, I read it last week.
Jean received the letter yesterday if that is the letter.

c)  the main clause  ----- Simple Present
It is to show the fact that happens in that condition.

Ice melts if it is heated.
I sweat if I run in the hot sun.
